The Official Cocktail of Summer 2010

Well now that we finally have a decade we know what to call we need a new drink to celebrate.

My favorite liquor of this past winter was Domaine de Canton because, really, is there anything that ginger doesn’t work with? However it seems I am not the only one with this opinion since the liquor store was sold out.  This made me cruise the aisle a bit and come across St-Germain.  At the time it came packaged with a carafe and the bottle is gorgeous.  It looked too good to pass up.  Boy am I glad we found it.  Made from elderflowers brought down from mountaintops in wicker baskets by little old men on bikes it has an elusive yet familiar flavor that is pure summer.

Alongside this Ali recently gave us a bottle of Bombay Sapphire which revived our love of gin and caused even more liquor isle explorations until we came across Hendrick’s gin.  It is infused with rose petals and cucumbers and converts everyone that tries it into gin drinkers.  And it is terrific with St-Germain!

St Hen & Tonic
1 1/2 parts Hendrick’s Gin
1/2 part St-Germain
3 parts Tonic Water
Combine in tall glass with ice.
Garnish with cucumber.

Cheesy Biscuits

Recently we had lunch at Benjy’s were they served cheese biscuits in lieu of the standard bread basket. They were quite good and we decided to try to make our own. We got the recipe from Caribbean Cookbook A Lifetime of Recipes by Rita G. Springer. The original recipe uses a cookie press which we don’t have so we rolled them out and used a cookie cutter. For cheese we used a combination of Romano and Parmesan. Once baked they were light and airy and delicious.

Cheese Biscuits

4 oz flour
1/2 teaspoon cayenne
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 oz grated cheese
3 oz margarine
1 egg yolk
iced water

Mix flour, grated cheese, salt and pepper.
Rub in margarine and mix to a smooth paste with egg yolk.
Roll out and cut.
Bake at 350 F for 20 minutes.
Cool on wire rack.

Had already eaten half of them by the time the picture was taken.
